Description
Surely one of the most visited and photographed landmarks on the Oregon coast, Haystack Rock is well deserving of its fame! I arrived in Cannon Beach one evening in June, not knowing it was practically the eve of the 50th annual Sandcastle Contest! Naturally that made it difficult to find a place to stay, but after a few stops I found a place right on the beach with Haystack Rock right outside the window (well....right outside and a little to the left....). The beachfront location was perfect for a quick trip out at sunset and another at sunrise. Haystack Rock is a 235-foot (72-meter) intertidal sea stack accessible from land at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs. The rock is also a nesting site for many sea birds, including terns and puffins. It is also a magnet for photographers, attracting many and dawn and dusk to try to capture the magic of the rock. As a bonus for me, you can just barely see Tillamook Head Lighthouse from here, seen very very small just to the right of the rock on the horizon.
