Description
Seen from Vermillion Lakes in Banff National Park (Alberta Canada) during a summer sunset, Mt Rundle glows golden. Luckily on this day the clouds cleared enough as the sun went down to enjoy the spectacular view. And if you zoom in and look really closely, you can even see a bald eagle sitting atop a tree. Due to the accessibility of the viewing point near Banff, Mt Rundle has become one of the most photographed and painted scenes in the Canadian Rockies. Mt. Rundle could actually be considered a small mountain range as the mountain extends for over 12 km (7.5 mi), on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway eastward from Banff to Canmore with seven distinct peaks along the way. The Creename was Waskahigan Watchi or house mountain. In 1858 John Palliser renamed the mountain after Reverend Robert Rundle, a Methodist invited by the Hudson's Bay Company to do missionary work in western Canada in the 1840s. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho along with three provincial parks comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site.
