Description
I have always loved the architecture of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth TX. This is the original building, designed by Louis Kahn in 1966 and opened to the public in 1972. It has since become a mecca of modern architecture. This is the main (west) facade of the building, consisting of three 100-foot bays, each fronted by an open, barrel-vaulted portico. The porticos are designed to express on the exterior the light-filled vaulted spaces that are the defining feature of the interior. I love the simplicity of the exterior, and the feel of the cool concrete and travertine. It takes on an entirely different feel at night, with dramatic lighting. In 1998, the American Institute of Architects gave the museum their prestigious Twenty-five Year Award, which is awarded to no more than one building per year. Robert Campbell, architectural critic for the Boston Globe and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, declared it to be "the greatest American building of the second half of the 20th century." And it's right here in my back yard!
