Description
The Pyramid of Cestius (in Italian, Piramide di Caio Cestio or Piramide Cestia) is an ancient pyramid in Rome, Italy, near the Porta San Paolo. Due to its incorporation into the city's fortifications, it is today one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Rome. The pyramid was build about 18 BCE - 12 BCE as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a magistrate in Rome. It is built of brick-faced concrete covered with slabs of white marble, standing on a travertine base. In the interior is the burial chamber, 5.95 m long, 4.1 m wide and 4.8 m high. The pyramid is the namesake of the Piramide metro station in Rome!
