Sally Lightfoot crabs are brightly-colored coastal scavengers, found in the Galapagos Islands and across the western coast of South and Central America. John Steinbeck described their colorful shells as ‘brilliant cloisonné carapaces’. They are rumored to have been named after a Caribbean dancer, due to their agility in jumping from rock to rock, their ability to run in four directions and their capacity to climb up vertical slopes. This extreme agility makes them very difficult to catch. And somewhat difficult to photograph! It’s difficult to get close to one except with a long lens. Many times we photographed them from offshore in a boat so getting one in focus was also a challenge! This one had made a brave foray onto the beach.
