I was waiting at the light to cross the street to Sforza Castle in Milan Italy when the crowds on the sidewalk ahead cleared for just an instant leaving this couple sitting by the Fountain of the Spouses. Then the light changed and the crowds surged forward. I’d gotten the instant I needed! The main tower is called Torre del Filarete after the architect who designed in in 1452. However, the current tower is also a reconstruction since the original had collapsed in 1521. It was inaugurated in 1905 with some additional elements from the original such as the clock and the statue of St Ambrose in the niche. The Fountain of the Spouses in the Piazza Castello directly in front of the tower was built in 1936 on the occasion of Mussolini’s visit to meet veterans of the Abyssinian war. It was dismantled in 1959 during construction of the underground but was revived in 1999. Sforza Castle (Italian: Castello Sforzesco) was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remnants of a 14th-century fortification. Later renovated and enlarged, in the 16th and 17th centuries it was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Extensively rebuilt by Luca Beltrami in 1891–1905, it now houses several of the city's museums and art collections.
