Description

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay Spain with the wild Bay of Biscay all around. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. The ascent to a hermitage at the top is said to be 241 steps. But with the beautiful scenery up and down the coast on both sides, you find yourself stopping many times along the way and before you know it you are at the top. Once there, you stand mesmerized by the motion of the sea all around and also spend some time watching the people making the journey up the winding path. Even though the top is only 80 m above sea level, it’s still a bit dizzying to look down the path you just took up. The hermitage is named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, and is dedicated to John the Baptist. There are some indications that it might date from the 9th century, but firmer evidence of its existence in the 10th century. For what looks like a small and insignificant islet today, it has been the scene of several historic event, including being sacked by Francis Drake, being attacked by the Huguenots, and being assaulted by English troops. On a more recent and peaceful note, it was used as a scene in season 7 of the Game of Thrones, standing in for Dragonstone.
