Description
Wormsloe Plantation is a very popular and iconic place to visit when you are in Savannah GA area The beautiful old gate and concrete arch, the live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, what's not to love? For one, all the cars! I had to wait until it was closed for the day before I could get a shot with the gates closed and no cars visible in the parking area on either side just inside the gate! I also worried about driving down the road inside the gates since it had been a dry dusty span of time, wondering how much of the dust the trees can take before it affects their health. The avenue beyond the gate leads to the tabby ruins of Wormsloe, the colonial estate of Noble Jones (1702-1775). (Tabby is a type of concrete made with oyster shells). Jones was a humble carpenter who arrived in Georgia in 1733 with James Oglethorpe and the first group of settlers from England. Wormsloe's tabby ruin is the oldest standing structure in Savannah. A testament to the opportunities that existed in early North America, Jones went on to serve the colony as a doctor, constable, Indian agent, Royal Councilor and surveyor, laying out the towns of Augusta and New Ebenezer. He also commanded a company of marines charged with defending the Georgia coast from the Spanish. Jones died at the beginning of the American Revolution, but his descendants sustained Wormsloe until the state of Georgia acquired most of the plantation in 1973. The state opened it to the public as a state historic site in 1979.
