Description

Needles Eye Tunnel in Custer State Park, seen as the small opening in the rocks, is the narrowest tunnel in the state of South Dakota. The tunnel was blasted through the sheer granite walls during construction of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, or the Needles Highway. The tunnel is 8' 4" wide by 12' 0" high. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. A short distance from the tunnel is a place to pull off the road, enjoy the scenery, and watch the cars navigate through the tunnel.
