Description
You might say the Church of San Giuseppe is hidden in plain sight in Orvieto Italy. Located on Via del Duomo, one of the main tourist streets, it is hidden behind a bare and simple exterior consisting only of a plain portal in an equally plain stone façade. However, when I was walking past it early one morning the door was open and only the lighted statue was visible from outside. I felt like I needed to tiptoe in, which I did, to find this lovely small octagonal church. The stone was laid for the foundation in 1665 and was dedicated to the Nazareth carpenter St Joseph who had been chosen as a patron saint of Orvieto in 1652. Construction was not completed until 1685. The complex passed to the Confraternita Nazarena in 1729, and was recently transferred to the parish of the Duomo. On the main altar there is a painting of considerable workmanship from the second half of the eighteenth century, depicting the Madonna with Child and Saint Joseph. A large celebration takes place every year here and on the square outside on March 19, St Joseph’s Day. FUN FACT: a web page entitled ‘Discovering the Churches of Orvieto’ called this a ‘modern church’!
