Description
On my last morning in Cordoba Spain, I was packed in anticipation of my train trip to Madrid. That included my tripod. So I felt a bit like I was missing my security blanket as I went out early for a last walk around the city with only my camera! As I rounded a corner not two blocks from my lodgings, I saw the bell tower of the Mezquita with a waning moon setting behind it. Of course I immediately wished I had my tripod but I made the best of it! Many cities in Spain have shared histories and heritage among Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, and Cordoba is one of them. What is today the Bell Tower was originally a Muslim minaret, as part of the Great Mosque complex. After the Christians reconquered the city in 1236, the minaret was converted into a belltower. The Bell Tower is one of the most emblematic icons of the city of Cordoba. At 54m in height, it is the tallest structure in Cordoba. It is also a wonderful lookout point, where you can climb to approximately 40m to view the Monumental Site and see the city from a new perspective. The present day Mesquita-Cathedral is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing much of the historic core of Cordoba.
