When you read about the San Juan River at Gooseneck State Park (Utah) you learn how it flows a distance of over six miles while advancing only one and a half miles toward Lake Powell ‘as the crow flies’. That is a little hard to visualize in your mind until you actually see all the twists and turns of the river as it carves its way through the canyon, all within the frame of your camera! Gooseneck State Park isn’t as famous as its Arizona cousin, but it offers an equally stunning view of what is called an ‘incised meander’. This carving has uncovered a rock record exposing 300 million years of time, leaving the river 1000 feet below the desert rim.
