Description
The Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) in Milan is an embarrassment of riches. From the sacred to the profane, it's all there. Or perhaps from the spiritual to the worldly. This is the worldly part, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the pantheon dedicated to the god of luxury consumerism! If you want to shop, you'd better save your pennies, otherwise be happy people-watching or (like me) photographing. In contrast to many modern shopping malls, as much was dedicated to the beauty of the structure as to the richness of the goods within. Milan's Galleria is one of the world's oldest shopping malls. It was designed in 1861 and built between 1865 and 1877. The arcade is covered by an arching glass and cast iron roof, a popular design for 19th-century arcades, with a glass dome in the center. Housed within a four-story double arcade in central Milan, the Galleria is named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy.
