Description
All artwork lends itself to individual interpretation. When I first saw this monument in Como Italy with the mountains in the background, I interpreted it as yearning or striving. Walk around on the other side there is another hand lying in a more horizontal position as part of the monument. The explanatory plaque was in Italian so I figured I’d look up information about it once I got home. The monument is called Monumento al Daduti per Servizio. The only information was on Explore Lake Como website: “Sculpture dedicated to disabled service people. Roughly translation on the plaque goes like this: ‘One hand is actively serving the country in defense of institutional values. The other hand is wounded in the line of duty.’ The monument is the most expressive part of the human body: hands. The ever-vigilant and active in the service of the country lift and protection all the institutional values, the other defeated and wounded in the line of duty and for this fall for the good of the national community.”
