Description
You climb up these ancient walls at the Moorish Castle in Sintra (near Lisbon Portugal), get spectacular views the Atlantic Ocean on one side, then look up even higher to see the Pena Palace perched far above. Then you visit the Pena Palace and look down at the Moorish Castle. One guidebook said of the Moorish Castle was worthwhile...if you can make it. Wrong, wrong, wrong! To me, this was a definite must while in Sintra! First constructed in the 8th and 9th centuries during the period of Muslim Iberia, it was taken by Christian forces from the Moors after the fall of Lisbon and became an important strategic point during the Reconquista. It is classified as a National Monument, part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sure, there are 'just' alot of walls, and much of them reconstructed. But the views are spectacular! It is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal at an elevation of nearly 1400'. You can climb to the highest point on the walls and feel like you are on top of the world looking out to sea, but then you turn around and see the Pena Palace sitting on a rock outcropping even higher than where you stand. It is spectacular! Don't always trust the reviews of others (even mine!), sometimes you just have to see it for yourself to decide.
