Description
Just a block off Las Ramblas in Barcelona and you feel like you have stepped into a tropical Spanish colonial scene! You can imagine yourself in Havana or Manila a century ago. This is Placa Reial, or Royal Plaza in the Barri Gotic of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Placa Reial is an oasis dotted with palm trees, surrounded by an arcade, and ringed by these pretty yellow buildings with white neoclassical trim. It was pretty quiet on a winter day, but is supposedly famous for many outdoor venues in the summer. On this day, the warm afternoon sunshine highlighted the lovely balconies surrounding the square. The plaza is also noted for the lanterns, which were the first public works designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaud.
