Description
Twenty minutes until four in a December afternoon and sunset is almost upon the Old Town Hall in Prague, Czech Republic! The 250' tall spire is one landmark of the Old Town Square, housing the Astronomical Clock (not visible in this photo). You can take an elevator to the top of the towers and watch the festivities in the square below or as the clock chimes every hour. In the center of the square and in the foreground of this photo is the memorial to Jan Hus. The monument was erected in 1915, 500 years after his martyrdom by fire. Jan Hus was a priest who lived and preached a century before Martin Luther. He condemned corruption in the Catholic church and promoted local religious autonomy. He was burned as a heretic. He is honored today as a national Czech hero as well as a religious reformer.
