Description
When you arrive on Rotoroa Island, a predator-free wildlife sanctuary and conservation park in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, you receive an orientation to the island’s special characteristics. One thing is emphasized is the emergency phone number and procedure. If you should need to call it, you need to specify that you are on Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf, since there is a Lake Rotoroa on the South Island and a town of Rotorua quite a distance away on the North Island! Luckily we didn’t need to activate that system and got to enjoy the many hiking trails and beautiful panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf. This view if from the southern viewpoint, looking toward Ponui on the left and Waiheke on the right. Rotoroa Island was off-limits to the public for over a century as New Zealand’s first and longest running alcohol and drug addiction treatment center. Today, it is a conservation and heritage estate thanks to the generosity of local philanthropists who negotiated a 99-year lease from the Salvation Army. To develop as a predator free wildlife sanctuary, a partnership between the Rotoroa Island Trust and Auckland Zoo, with the support of DOC, was established to help restore native species. Endangered species which require intensive wildlife management to survive and thrive have been introduced such as kiwi, takahē, tĪeke (saddlebacks), whitehead, pateke, shore skinks and moko skinks. Along the many hiking trails on the island, you will certainly see many of them!
