Description
It had been a week of dreary and rainy weather in Spain, and even when the forecast was good, the weather turned out worse than forecast. The forecast for this day was more of the same, and indeed, it was dreary as I left Madrid. But 50 km later in Aranjuez, the sun was out! For once the weather was better than forecast and I made the most of the few hours of sun before the clouds and rain moved back in. I fast-walked first to the Royal Palace to find it bathed in light under an intensely blue sky. The history of Aranjuez as a royal site began in the 15th century, although construction of the present palace was not started until the mid-16th century. After the death of Philip II in 1598, the partially completed project was abandoned due to economic and political crises and the fall of the royal house of Habsburg. In 1700, the first Bourbon king of Spain, Philip V (king from 1700-1724), resumed the work, intending to make Aranjuez a rival to Versailles. However, it was used little and almost destroyed by fire in 1748. Ferdinand VI (king from 1746-1759) rebuilt the palace respecting the original foundations, but reflecting the late baroque style and 18th century aesthetic of an imposing and ostentatious exterior accommodating a series of sumptuously furnished spaces within. The imposing building of today is mainly due to Charles III (king from 1759–1788) in his reforming work for Madrid and modernization of the Spanish state. Charles III chose Aranjuez to be his spring and summer residence at a period of history when the Royal Court used to move from Madrid in the spring and did not return to the capital until October. In 1931, during the Second Spanish Republic, the area was declared an Artistic Historical Monument and opened to the public. The palace, gardens and associated buildings are part of the Aranjuez Cultural Landscape, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
