Description
Spider monkeys are New World social primates that gather in groups of up to 2-3 dozen animals. We found them traversing the rainforest in southwestern Costa Rica, leaping from branch to branch and following one another along the same tree pathway! That is the only way I could have ever hoped to get a photo as one after another leapt across this opening in the branches. Spider monkeys have long, lanky arms and prehensile (gripping) tails that enable them to move easily and gracefully from branch to branch and tree to tree. These nimble monkeys spend most of their time aloft, and maintain a powerful grip on branches even though they have no thumbs. A mother carries her infant around her belly for the first month after birth. After this, she carries it on her lower back as seen here. The infant wraps its tail around its mother's and tightly grabs her midsection.
