The art of terrazzamenti is seen very dramatically in the vineyards in part of a hike from Corniglia to Manarola in the Cinque Terre area of Italy, where young vines are growing for wine making. Terrazzamenti simply means terracing, although it sounds more poetic in Italian. The walls are built without cement and are truly the work of artisans. Terracing has been used for centuries allowing the steep slopes to be cultivated with vineyards and apple and lemon groves. These dry stone walls also prevent the land from sliding into the sea. They absorb water from heavy rains, while allowing the runoff to flow gently downhill, preventing the land from washing away. The advent of tourism and the lure of higher paying city jobs has caused some to abandon their farms and many of the walls are in disrepair. The Cinque Terre National Park has been established to help preserve and maintain the natural landscape while promoting sustainable tourism that is now vital to the economic success of Cinque Terre. In 1997, the entire Cinque Terre area was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
