Description
To many visitors arriving in Girona, a city about an hour's train ride north of Barcelona, this is their first stop, the classic view of the Onyar River, the Spanish Venice. The houses are colorful and laundry hangs from many of the windows. The Catalan flag is also seen flying from many balconies. The Onyar River demarcates the historic centre on its right bank from the commercial centre on the left. On the historic side behind the riverside buildings, there is a tightly packed labyrinth of medieval buildings on narrow cobblestone streets with steep connecting stairways. The distinctive belfry of the Basilica of Sant Feliu with its eight pinnacles is seen around the bend of the river. FUN FACT: Girona needs no introduction to gourmands and TV aficionados. Parts of the sixth season of Game of Thrones were shot here. And the triple-Michelin-starred restaurant El Celler de Can Roca was once again crowned World's Best Restaurant in the prestigious San Pellegrino awards.
