We were sitting on the back patio enjoying a summer late afternoon when we spied what looked like a juvenile black-chinned hummingbird flitting around the flowering bushes and trees in the yard. Naturally, I didn’t have my camera but decided to at least go get it and set it up, hoping it might stick around for a while. Luckily for me, it hung around our yard for about 15 minutes but was flitting around endlessly and difficult to catch on camera. Finally, I was able to lock focus on it for a few seconds as it was debating on which of the Turk’s cap (Malvaviscus arboreus) flowers to have a sip from. The Turk’s cap is well known for attracting hummingbirds as well as butterflies. It’s sometimes called a sleeping hibiscus because the petals never fully open.
