Description

This juvenile lava heron was learning a hard lesson about catching and eating a crab. After a protracted struggle, the crab managed an escape. The heron presumably learned some tricks in order to catch its next meal. The lava heron is a species endemic to the Galapagos Islands of Equador. These small herons live and nest along the lava rock coastlines, saltwater lagoons, and mangrove forests.
