Description
I was hiking from Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre region of Italy to Portovenere, part of the same UNESCO World Heritage area. It was a very rainy year but I wasn’t going to let that deter me! Rain was forecast for the afternoon and the hike was at least 6 hours, plus or minus depending on delays for photo-taking! So I set off early with high hopes. This is the scene just before descending into Portovenere. Part of the Doria Castle is seen on the left. This castle was built by the Genoese in 1161 and stands as an example of Genoa military architecture. On the right is the Church of St Peter, officially consecrated in 1198 but with many changes over the years. Across the channel is Isola Palmaria, one of three islands off the coast of Portovenere. The year after this photo was taken, I had the opportunity to hike around Isola Palmaria. Part of the hiking trail, marked ‘very steep’, is off to the right of the clearing for the power lines. At the top of the trail, we debated about whether ‘very steep’ meant ‘dangerous’ or just ‘be careful’. In the US, ‘very steep’ would probably mean not too bad, but Europeans are much more realistic so we took a moment to consider. In the end we took the trail (it WAS very steep!) and were rewarded with spectacular views looking back toward Portovenere. On this day, however, the rain started falling soon after this photo so I made it just it time! Of course, on the right is the Ligurian Sea, the part of the Mediterranean Sea touching this coast. In 1997, Isola Palmaria, together with Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
This is a great souvenir or the Cinque Terre region of Italy, especially if you never get the chance to hike out of the town to view it from above. It is available in in many sizes and formats of wall art to fit individual needs and tastes.
