Step into San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome Italy and be amazed! As in many historic churches and cathedral, many resources and much workmanship have been invested in producing a WOW effect. One can imagine the effect on the populace in past centuries when such grandeur was unheard of and out of reach of the normal person. Although the church dates from CE 312, most of what is seen in the interior today dates from after 1600 when Borromini was commissioned to remake the interior in the Baroque style. The current open floor is appealing and allows the visitor to wander at will to enjoy the décor. San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, of which the Pope is the reigning bishop. This is the senior of the four major basilicas of Rome, the other three being San Pietro in Vaticano, San Paolo fuori le Mura and Santa Maria Maggiore. This is surprising to most visitors since it is assumed that St Peter’s has primacy. If you can figure out the various names, this church is also called Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran, Santissimo Salvatore e Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista in Laterano, the Papal Archbasilica of St. John [in] Lateran, St. John Lateran, or the Lateran Basilica. The ‘Laterano’ part of the name dates from the history of the church as a palace of the Laterani family in Roman times. As with the other major basilicas in Rome, the archbasilica and its adjoining edifices have extraterritorial status from Italy, as laid out in the Lateran Treaty of 1929 with Italy under Benito Mussolini.
