Description
The Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) sits in Piazza Navona in Rome Italy. The base of the fountain is a basin from the centre of which travertine rocks rise to support four river gods and above them, a copy of an Egyptian obelisk . The four river gods represent four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile representing Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Ganges representing Asia, and the RĂo de la Plata representing the Americas. Each river god is surrounded by fauna and flora meant to help identify his respective continent. Each also carries allegories and metaphors with it. The obelisk itself is thought to represent the rays of the sun or the light of the church. The Ganges River god (facing the camera) carries a long oar, representing the river's navigability. He is looking away from the obelisk, thought to signify that Asia was not accepting of the symbolic light. The fountain was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
