Description
One tour book said “As for Slope Pt, it’s not too interesting….there’s nothing there of interest but a signpost”. I guess it depends on your point of view! Slope Point is the most southerly spot on New Zealand’s South Island. Before you get to the single little yellow signpost, you traverse a couple km of pastureland where you’d like to just look off to the horizon, but where you have to keep glancing downward to avoid the sheep dung! When you get to the shore, you find yourself on a steep and rugged cliff dropping down to the sea. The weather is fierce, it’s the Roaring Forties after all, where cold air whirls around the Antarctic Ocean uninterrupted, causing the winds to gain immense strength before hurling themselves at whatever objects they first encounter. If you like limitless views, this is for you, from the pastureland that stretches to the horizon, to….well….the horizon which stretches….4803km to Antarctica!
