Description
Stewart Island/Rakiura New Zealand is the third-largest island of New Zealand, and most of the island is set aside as Rakiura National Park, New Zealand's newest national park. There are more miles/km of hiking trails than there are of roads. While I don’t know the number of miles/km of trails, there are only 20 km of roads and we hiked many more than that! On the day that we hiked the Horseshoe Bay trail, this side of the trail was calm. But round the headlands and we were definitely in the Roaring 40s! Stewart Island/Rakiura lies 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of the South Island, across the Foveaux Strait. Its permanent population is 381 people as of the 2013 census, most of whom live in the settlement of Oban (aka Halfmoon Bay).
