Description
We spied this yellow-headed caracara on a fencepost on the side of the road and crept slowly towards him in our vehicle. Slowly….very slowly! We quietly opened the side doors and windows and all focused our lenses, hoping to get some photos before he flew away! The yellow-headed caracara (Milvago chimachima) is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. Unlike some other falcons, the caracara is not a fast-flying aerial hunter, but is rather sluggish (maybe that’s why we were able to get photos!) and often obtains food by scavenging. The Yellow-headed Caracara is a small, pale caracara of open habitats in lowlands from Costa Rica south to northern Argentina and Uruguay. It is mostly buffy-yellow, with a narrow dark eye line, dark brown upperparts, and dark brown banding on the tail. It is 41–46 cm (16–18 in) in length and weighs 325 g (11.5 oz) on average.
