Description
I decided one day in Rome Italy to photograph fountains, thinking that with some leg work I could get them all. If you laughed at that statement, then you know more about Rome’s fountains than I did before that day. Now I know that Rome has more fountains than you can count: gigantic showy fountains, smaller decorative fountains, fountains that are mounted on a wall, ‘nasoni’ that look like a small post with a spout. Some are elaborate, some are plain. They are a gift from days gone by where water was delivered to Rome by aqueducts and fed by gravity to fountains all over the city to provide drinking water. Rome has at least fifty monumental fountains and over 2000 fountains in all, more than any other city in the world. And all still providing clean pure water. Needless to say, I barely made a dent in the inventory of Rome’s fountains on my “I spy a fountain” day. This little dragon fountain is mounted on a wall on the Via della Conciliazone (the road which leads from St Peters in Vatican City to Castel Sant’Angelo. It is not in its original location but appears to be part of the group of fountains made by Pope Paul V Borghese during his pontificate (1605 - 1621).

I understand what you said about 'laughing'. Rome has a few fountains, doesn't it? Well done, Joan! l/f and nominated for a Special Feature in the 1000 Views group.

Great read, we lost the knowledge of what fountains represented to the Romans. Great work
