Description
This female Northern Shoveler was photographed in Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Wikipedia says the plumage of the female northern shoveler is “a drab mottled brown”. I would disagree! I think she is beautiful! The northern shoveler is unmistakable due to its spatulate bill. The female’s bill is gray tinged with orange. A really close look at the bill in this photo shows the well-developed comb-like structures on the edge of the bill that act like sieves and skim food from the water’s surface.Thank you for visiting my art galleries.
