On a chilly morning, Canary Springs in the Mammoth Hot Springs area in Yellowstone National Park was enveloped in thick swirling sulfur-smelling mist. This harsh environment may not be a friendly place for humans but is perfect for various types of bacteria that thrive in extreme conditions. The orange, yellowish, and brown colors are due to the cyanobacteria living in the springs. The terraces in this area are formed when mineral-filled heated water from the magma chamber below ascends through the limestone deposits of the area. Various chemical reactions occur whereby gases are given off, pH changes, and calcium carbonate is deposited on the surface.
