As I walked through the thick steam of the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park after below-freezing temperatures and snow overnight, I tried to imagine how early humans viewed the otherworldly landscape. Whether it was humans of the Paleoindian period (~10,000 years ago), or any of the other groups of humans down through the ages, it must have been awe-inspiring to come upon this sight. On this day, the thick steam coming from the thermal features seemed to mix with the cumulus clouds to produce an almost opaque vista where it was hard to tell where the steam ended and the clouds began. Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic of Yellowstone's thermal areas. It is changing all the time, which makes it one of the most interesting thermal areas in the Park. These changes can involve unusual boiling, chemical changes to water, variations in spring activity, and increases in acidity and cloudiness of certain hot springs and geysers.
