Usually a cathedral becomes a center of activity and particularly tourist activity, in many European cities. But in Lucca Italy, the cathedral seems a little secluded from the main tourist center. But no matter….it just left things a little quieter for some photos in the blue hour. Lucca Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. Construction was begun in 1063 by Bishop Anselm (later Pope Alexander II). However, the west front seen here was begun later in 1204 and consists of a vast portico of three magnificent arches, and above them three ranges of open galleries adorned with sculptures. One of the arches is smaller than the other two because they had to accommodate the bell tower, which already existed. I’m sure there’s a reason why they didn’t just make the church a little wider so that all the arches could be the same. The base of the bell tower is made of a quartz stone called guamo, which is darker than the limestone above. There is one opening on each side of the tower at three floors up, followed by progressively more openings until fiver per side is reached at the top.
