Description
After an overnight flight and several hours on the train, I reached Lucca Italy in the late afternoon and dropped by bags in my B&B. Ever anxious to get out and see the neighborhood, I grabbed my camera with barely a pause. And barely a block out of the B&B, dominating the Piazza San Frediano, is the basilica. Even jet-lagged, it was hard not to wake up and do a double take upon seeing the façade of the Basilica of San Frediano. Even more astounding is that the golden mosaic dates from the 13th century. It is a representation of Christ ascending into heaven framed by two angels with the apostles below. It is said to be an extremely rare ornamentation in the Romanesque style. Apparently, the Virgin Mary used to be in the mosaic but was cut out when the window was installed!
